The harbor of Dongshih in the late morning light |
This was a nice walk, incorporating more typical Southwest Coast views in fine weather, and the lovely pastoral and tranquil Aogu Wetlands.
Literally piles of oyster shells lying around everywhere. |
The temple, and other local scenes. |
Mr and Mrs Chiayi: what kind of mushrooms were those? |
As always, back to walking by the sea. |
A smaller harbor just to the north, Weigang. |
A boy playing "fort" in some pier stones filled with - you guessed it - oyster shells. |
Still more piles and piles of oyster shells. |
Country womenfolk working the shell fields. |
Coast guard station. |
Almost there! |
The Aogu Wetlands park is more than just wetlands. Drained by the Japanese, it became a sugar cane plantation. When this became uneconomical, other types of farming were adopted, but on a minor scale. The park is largely undeveloped and surprisingly clean, lovely and uncrowded. Definitely a place worth visiting on a nice day if you are in the area.
Using the shells as decoration. |
Map of the Aogu area. |
Scenes from the park. |
Duck blind, for viewing. |
Birdies! |
